The four gifts of Christmas: peace, hope, joy, and love. Really, that's all we need for a "good life." And today, I was reminded of that very thing. Tonight the Greater Atlanta Girls Choir had the privilege of performing at Home By Dark with many other musicians just as passionate as we are for sharing music. It was beautiful seeing true joy in each of our faces and voices and theirs as well. It infiltrated every life in the room like a contagious disease.
We were waiting backstage for our next song when the band began playing a lovely jazz piece. All of us girls already had the nervous energy bubbling inside of us and with the music playing, we couldn't help but dance. Every girl broke into her favorite dance moves before we all ended up doing the Macarena together to some Christmas jazz piece. That was a moment of joy. Nothing else mattered but the moment, being with all those girls, letting the music flow through and around us.
It's Christmas. Sure, the weather might not be right, the presents might not be wrapped, the cookies not baked, nor the travel plans finalized, but God is and has been handing us joy, peace, hope, and love, and it's about time we accept it.

December 13: Tis the Season
What a great day! I loved seeing people from age 3 to age 80+ worship the king. Sure it doesn't feel like Christmas to my skin in this 70 degree weather, but in my heart, it is most certainly the season for hope, joy, peace, and love, and I could not be any more grateful for the lovely church and musical groups I am a part of. I hope your advent so far is preparing you for the big celebration of the king's coming as much as mine is. Merry Christmas!

December 12: Fog
I've been lazy the past week about posting. But not today.
This morning there was a dense fog throughout the neighborhood. I was out, biking and walking, and was amazed by the way it obscures what it right in front of you, making it seem empty or distant. Even being certain of what is there, you have no proof; it cannot be seen until you're practically next to it; you must believe, even when it is obscured.
Some things, much stronger than fog, obscure our view of God. And yet, we must believe. Even when the fog is heavy, God is no further away than when we can see Him clearly. It is only our sight that is blocked, not his presence. Be encouraged. Even when we cannot "see" God, He is there, ready for us to open our eyes.

December 2: Reparation
This evening during hand chimes, where I lead a small group of 6-8 year olds, the kindest, gentlest and tiniest girl accidentally rang her chime into the neighboring boy's elbow. He responded with silent tears and a few groans. Immediately, she said "sorry! sorry! I didn't mean to hit you. I'm sorry! Are you ok? It was an accident." He stayed as calm as he could, but clearly was experiencing the sharp pain of a hit to the "funny bone." I advised him to take a break and listen as we play through the song once. He sat down meanwhile the girl picked up his chime in a compassionate manner, doing what should could to make up for her mistake. It was so sweet; I could see her pure desire to repair the damage she'd done, even though it was an accident. This is a perfect example of how God wants us to build His kingdom; any damages in our relationships, like holes in a quilt, must be sewed back together through forgiveness and efforts to repair the damages.

November 27-29: Relationships
I know I've said it before, but again, over the past few days, I have really recognized the importance of the relationships in my life. I am blessed by amazing family, friends, mentors, even kind strangers. I don’t know where I’d be without all the people that have put in their time to support me. I owe it to these people that I am who I am, a daughter and servant of God.

November 26: Explosive Gratitude
Gratitude is contagious. Saying "I'm thankful for..." practically shuts down negativity, at least verbalized negativity. It's difficult, nearly impossible, to be greedy when giving thanks, and it is a pleasure to see the thanksgiving exploding all over social media, between neighbors, and in relationships. God desires thankful people, and he deserves our appreciation of all he has given us. I am thankful; my heart is full. Thank you, God.

November 24: Giving the Thanks
I came across a few verses in the bible this morning that led me to a realization. It's one thing to be thankful, but it's another to give out of thankfulness. When we are grateful, that's great, but when we recognize our ability to give because of all we have, that is a blessing.

November 23: 'Tis the Season
It seems that this time of year is a season of many things: of traditions, fun, family, laughter, hope, joy, peace, gratitude, but also greed, selfishness, business, stress, distractions, and chaos. What is the point of celebrating the coming of our Savior or thanksgiving to God if it is bombarded by evil and sin? This year will be different for me. I am focusing my energy on the celebration and praise of MY SAVIOR'S COMING! It will be challenging, might even seem impossible, but that's my goal: to prioritize the "reason for the season."

November 22: Thankful
It's the season of thanksgiving, but it occurred to me this morning that it should be the season of thanks-living (I cannot take credit for this pun). Actually, every day should be lived thankfully. An attitude of gratitude can be transformative...supposedly. I'm going to try it out; let's see what happens.

November 19-21: Perspective
The past few days have been all about perspective.
On Thursday, I had to choose between a positive perspective and a negative one when it came to encouraging success for one of our choir pieces or leaning towards giving up. When it was announced that it was too late to give up, we tried harder, and optimistically learned the entire song.
On Friday, I spoke with my mentor about a "kingdom perspective" versus a "worldly perspective"--seeing things through God's eyes and his plan versus our eyes and selfish plan. After all, what's better: to become a millionaire and live in luxury for several years before suffering in hell for eternity or to live on the bare necessities for a few years in order to spend eternity in paradise?
And today, I sought God's perspective of a college campus and also read James 4 which instructs us to live for God, not the world.
It seems clear to me that the things in this life are temporary. I can rejoice in knowing that I am saved, and going further, use this zeal to lead others towards eternity in heaven.

November 18: Just a Short Conversation
In my calculus class today, several of us got talking about our favorite bible verses. I thought to myself, "what a great opportunity to share and grow my faith." The conversation went from talking about loving unconditionally to the cursed kids in 2 Kings who were attacked by bears. Nevertheless, it was a short conversation that opened the door for God to enter into our days as well as for an invitation to be extended to those who may not be as familiar with God's word who were sitting in the room with us. Who knows? Maybe that moment was just what someone needed to get through the day or even to reestablish their relationship with Christ.

November 16: The Bigger Picture
This morning I enjoyed reading about the need for a servant's mind to be focused on God's will and His desire, and this evening, this idea was re-emphasized in the movie Woodlawn. All of this has reminded me that the little things we do can add up to big impacts on the world if we do them for God and not for ourselves or any worldly desire.

November 13-15: Part of the Body
I painted a mosaic of canvases for my confirmands this weekend. All 16 canvases were put together and painted into an image of Jesus. This morning, I gave each of them one of the canvases, reminding them that they have a unique position in the body of Christ, without which it would be incomplete. This has been a reminder to me all week: we have gifts and imperfections--lots of both--and they define our niche in God's plan. Through all times, our individual actions, thoughts, words, and prayers make an impact, and it's our choice if this impact is for the better or for the worse.

November 12: Just Be There
Today I had the privilege of going with a friend to serve with her in her gold project for girl scouts. She has created a reading program at a local elementary school, and today was the kick-off day! Only she and I went, but it was a success, and I could tell it meant a lot to her to have my support. We've all been there--out on the ledge, hoping to succeed, but feeling exposed and at risk--so I'm sure you know what it means to have the support. Pay attention: God may be providing you with an opportunity right now to be someone's support, and your actions could be what leads them to the Father and his never-failing presence.

November 11: Go with the Flow
Proverbs 16:32 says "Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city." It seems today may have been a better day if everyone I encountered had read this verse. There were so many little arguments that disrupted relationships and the love of God. How much easier it would be if we could all get along! What I've learned from today: God desires for each of us to be treated with love, and therefore, to treat others with love; do not let anger and selfishness take control, but instead, be devoted to God.

November 9-10: Fear God
Our God is a big God. He can do amazing things, big things if we commit to him. It's amazing that God can bless us both through cold, rainy weather and beautiful sunshine if we only allow him. It's important that we turn towards God, never away from him, no matter the temptation; I found a part of Moses' story in which God commanded him to speak to a rock so that its water flowed for the people, but instead, out of rage, Moses' struck the rock. Never before had I realized that the rock represents the Rock of God, and we should never abuse him or direct our anger towards him. He deserves respect and commitment.

November 8: The Comparison
I really enjoyed time with my friends last night and this morning. I also enjoyed leading the last confirmation class of the season and helping preschoolers with their choir performance. And as I did all these things, I recognized that for some of us, it what the first time in that given situation, but for others, including me, it was certainly not the first. Basically, I felt old. But then God revealed to me that my sentimentality came from the comparison between the present and the past. If I was looking at today as the first of everything, I would have renewed excitement and zeal for everything I did. Sounds like a pretty enjoyable way of living. What if I treated each day as a new day? First impressions, first experiences...I would certainly be more purposeful in my actions and more appreciative of the everyday blessings. Otherwise, I might get lost in the comparison and miss the divine events passing before me.

--November 7: Blown by the Rain
It seems as though I've dropped off a little from the world of blogging. Fear not! I'm back.
I was driving this morning in my car-filled pile of leaves through the rain (which has been consistently falling for the past week). Most of the leaves were blowing from my car, while some clung on by just a tip, flapping in the wind and rain. Others were still plastered to the car by a combination of the water and wind. To clarify, the leaves on the rear of the car were blown off pretty quickly; the wind was blowing them in the opposite direction. The leaves on the side of the car were flapping, trying to stay on, but they had no defense from the wind, and most fell off. The leaves on the front stayed put; the wind was pushing them onto the car. I'm a leaf. Sometimes, I find myself pushing against the wind, using my gifts (the car) in the wrong way. Other times, I ignore keep my gifts locked away, just within reach, and hope to withstand whatever forces are pushing me. The third area is where I should be--using my gifts in the way they're meant so that the wind (the Holy Spirit) may push me and make these gifts even more effective.
What side of the car are you riding?

November 1: It's about the People
It doesn't matter where you are, what you're doing, what you have, how you feel, but rather the people you're with. It's people's stories and experiences that leave an impact on your life. It's what someone has done for you or said to you that you remember. It's the conversations you have that make a meal enjoyable. All that to say, today I was blessed by many people and inspired to be a blessing too with my words, thoughts, and actions. That's what matters. That's how we can witness to the Gospel and share with others God's love.

October 30-31: Life Isn't a List
As I've mentioned before, I organize my tasks in a detailed to-do list app. I have become dependent on this for my "what's next?" when it comes to homework and responsibilities, but I have realized that may dependency on those check-boxes has resulted in my list-like lifestyle. Did I wake up? check. Did I brush my teeth? check. Did I do my devotional? check. Sometimes it seems to become, Did I spend time with people? check. Did I complete the list of requirements for the day? check?
There's a reason we don't measure the length of a day by the number of tasks we complete. We measure it by it's time. A day is 24 hours. Period. Regardless of if we spend all day in bed or if we don't rest for a minute. What we are able to get done in 24 hours isn't what defines a day. It's the experiences during those 24 hours that are meaningful. A check-list life isn't how we should operate. God has bigger plans for us than what can fit on a check-list; so tomorrow, those 24 hours (well, actually 25), will be filled with experiences, not check-boxes.

October 29: Illuminated
This morning, I was biking through the moonlit sky. It was beautiful; the bright moon lit up the clouds and made the morning less dark, reminding me that the sun was coming. It got me thinking--the only reason the moon seems bright is because of the sunlight reflecting off of it and its contrast in the darkness. The sun cannot light up the darkness of night because that destroys the definition of night, but God's light works in a similar way.
God is our sun. He is bright even when surrounded by light, but he is so bright and pure that he cannot be in the darkness of sin. Therefore, he has sent Jesus and the Holy Spirit in us to be the light in the darkness but only when we are illuminated by him. We are the moon. We are charged by the sun but are needed most in the darkness.

October 26-28: So Fast
Before I've realized it, a day is over. They say that time goes faster as you get older, and I believe it; time sure does seem to be flying by! And the difficulty with that is it is so easy to get caught up in the world that is passing by rather than remaining focused on our God who is never changing and always by our side. As time goes by, it is more important to stay focused on God's will, his plan, his perspective because he will stay consistent in a changing world.

October 23-25: Simplicity
This weekend I've seen the beauty in simplicity. Simplicity meaning the simple reddening of tree leaves that create beautiful scenery. The same simplicity that is found in just being with the people you love; there's no complicated itinerary needed to share that love. Simplicity in a child creating a $100 bill from the only paper she has because she wants to tithe. Just as Jesus said, "'I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn't receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.'" (Mark 10:15) Be simple.

October 22: Why?
What's the reason for everything you do? For me, it differs--I go to school to learn; I walk my dogs to give them exercise; I go to choir because they're my team; I spend time with friends because I enjoy it. But what if I did everything for God's purpose? If I make myself available for his use in all I do...the possibilities are endless.
October 21: BOO
Last night, as I was beginning to cram for a calculus quiz, a loud three knocks came from the garage door. The dogs began to go crazy barking, and I, skeptical about who might be at the door, tip-toe into another room to look up the driveway and see if anyone is driving out. Humorously to my surprise, a bobbing flashlight illuminates the two young boys (likely the kids I babysit) sprinting up the driveway.
Now unafraid, I open the door and find the "You've been booed" package on the step. Couldn't have been better timing--a bucket full of candy seemed like a gift from God amidst my stressful studying.
But if I hadn't opened the door, if I'd run and hid, or if I'd been deaf enough not to hear the knock or the dogs, I wouldn't have found the gift. It was delivered within my reach, but I still had to make the effort to get it. Hmmmm... I wonder how many gifts from God are laying just within my reach that I have run from or ignored. I didn't need candy last night; I needed encouragement--would I have remembered that God is holding out his hand if a blazingly obvious bucket of candy hadn't arrived at my doorstep?

October 20: Keeping an Open Mind
I had a strong feeling today that I should be open minded and open eyed for the ways God may be using me. So I was. I don't know how I may have affected someone's life, but it sure affected my life. I was able to enjoy the day, even moments that I would usually have perceived as useless because useless to me might be a God-thing and restoration of faith to someone else.

October 19: Enjoy Every Moment!
To conclude my day in the pediatric office today, I stood in a 40 minute visit of a teenage boy who came in for ADHD medicine prescription. For that entire time, he did not smile or change posture or demonstrate any interest in life. He stated that he was good at nothing, interested in nothing, and motivated to do nothing. After the amazing weekend I just had, it hurt to see someone not enjoying the wonderful potential around him, and immediately I prayed to God, asking for him to reveal to this boy his purpose and potential.
There was no incredible, immediate effect, but prayers are powerful, and witnessing his withdrawal has certainly reminded me of the life I so often take for granted.

October 16-18: Domino Effect
What an amazing weekend it has been! I have been at Camp Glisson as a high school leader for the confirmands at my church. This was my third confirmation retreat that I have attended as a leader, and again, I was blown away by the impact God has through other people. I remember being confirmed and the impact my high school leaders had on my faith journey, and now I have witnessed how I have impacted my confirmands. It's like a row of dominoes; hit one over, and they all fall down. I can only imagine what these confirmands will go on to do; how far will the trail of fallen dominoes go?God is good. When we dedicate our time and actions to his will alone, he will use them to do BIG things. I am so grateful for the opportunities I have had and the gifts God has given me to be a mentor in these kids' lives.

October 14: Call and Response
Today, I was volunteering in a kindergarten class simply by helping where needed. I enjoyed watching the teacher command control of her class with call and responses: she'd simply say a phrase and the class would produce their response in unison and be quiet. I was amazed. They became little obedient robots (though I assure you, they still had plenty of unique personalities). Needless to say, these calls and responses were very effective in getting the focus of all the children. It makes me wonder about God's use of calls and responses. Are there areas in my life that I can easily recognize as God's call and have enough experience or knowledge to respond as he wants? Are there times when I am distracted and need a call from him to get back on the right path? Yes and yes. I know God calls me back when I wander away, but I need to work on responding as he wants.

October 11-13: To-Do
I have a to-do list, and it is my never-failing guide to what needs to get done. If it's on my list, I'll do it, and usually I'll do it on time. My list has grown long and continues to grow every day, and it's hard not to get so focused on it that I forget about the things that aren't on my to-do...like talking to people, eating meals, enjoying life, praying, reading scripture. But these are the important things; my to-do list should be my options for free time, rather than the other way around. Life isn't a list of things to do; it's the experiences that lead to getting some of those things done. I need to put aside the to-do list for a little and maintain the important things that are too grandiose for any list.

October 8-10: Community of Support
It's people that determine if a day is good or bad. They can ruin your day, but more often, they make the day better. I am blessed to have some pretty awesome friends who not only encourage me but also provide me with opportunities to witness encouragement to even strangers. The past few days I've seen classmates cheer on the presenter, the "domino" effect of random kindness, and the power of laughter to cheer any soul. It's not about what we accomplish, but the journey we take to get there. Enjoy and be grateful for the people around you, and never hesitate to be an encourager.

October 7: He Did It Again
God's got the control. He's made that apparent to me this week. Situations just seem to "work out" for my benefit even against the odds. God is making it clear to me that he's taking care of me, that I can just trust him in all situations.

October 6: Fully Committed
While I was walking today, I passed by this dad who was walking uphill, pushing a tricycle, carrying a baby who was strapped to him, monitoring his son who was waving an oversized stick/tree branch, and keeping an eye on his daughter who was riding her bike further ahead. He had his hands full, but not in such a way that he seemed stressed or out of control. He just seemed fully committed to being a dad and supervising his children.
I think God has similar qualities: he will carry us when we can't walk, push us when we are weak, warn us when we create danger and encourage us when we are strong. Never will he leave us--he's fully committed.

October 5: Under Control
I don't know for sure how much God manipulates my daily activities or timings in order for certain events to happen...I don't know if it is his doing or if it is his using certain "coincidental" situations to raise my awareness of his presence, but today, through one of these methods, God reminded me that he's got my situation under control. I was rushing to school. My travel time is usually 8-13 minutes, and I had exactly 8 minutes to make it to my meeting on time. So I left the house. I stopped at the stop signs but never had to wait longer to turn. I didn't even have to slow down to cross through the traffic-light-regulated intersection. And before I knew it, 5 minutes later I was pulling into the school. Maybe God fixed the car pattern and traffic signals just for me, but he certainly did use the situation to remind me of his protecting control.

October 4: Who Am I?
There are so many different answers I could give to this question--a student, a singer, a daughter, a friend, a sister, a volunteer, an employee--and I would give each of these responses depending on the situation, but only one answer encapsulates who I am in every situation--I am a sinner, but I live freely in the love and grace of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

October 3: Living in Expectation
I found myself today thinking about Christmas time, getting excited about the chill in the air, the lights, the music, the laughter, the food. Then I looked around and was disappointed by the gloomy gray sky and the 2+ months that separate me from the holiday season. But when I stopped thinking about the atmosphere of Christmas and began to think of Jesus' birth, and his resurrection, and then his love for me, it seemed the day just lit up. I don't have to wait to celebrate all that, I can do that today, and I will. Merry Christmas!

October 2: National Smile Day
Before today, I had not researched the bizarre "national holidays" there are in America. Today, the first Friday of October, we celebrate National Simile Day. It is also National Custodial Worker Day and National Name Your Car Day. And I suppose that just like Mothers' Day and Fathers' Day, these are days to appreciate some aspect of life, whether it's custodians or smiles or a car. I wonder who came up with each of these holidays. Who said, "we need a day to appreciate smiles?" But it makes me wonder more why they can't be appreciated or recognized on any normal day and if smiling a so uncommon that a day dedicated to them is a big change?
But this gratitude (or lack there-of) is bigger than a National Smile Day. What about Easter and Christmas? Why can't the joy and hope and peace found in these days be found in every day? Do we spend a year forgetting, just so we can celebrate again, like we always have? What if we spent the year building on that celebration, like a spiraling staircase moving up and up, rather than a merry-go-round?
I don't know about you, but I'd rather every day be a celebration of Christ's birth and his resurrection. After all, I'm not just going to stop smiling tomorrow and wait until next year to grin again.

September 30-October 1: Being Like Jesus
No matter what we do, someone or something will be against us Christians. That's just what happens when the things of the world are of our savior's enemy. Satan, of course, sees us as a threat and throws everything he can in our way.
When something seems unfair or a desire for money or fame becomes overpowering, Jesus is our source of power. What would he do in our place? That is the ultimate question and the guide to our actions. I have witnessed the past and present power of our savior, and it's time for us all to step up to the challenge of fighting evil.

September 29: Pieces Falling into Place
I love puzzles. They're fun to do and rewarding to finish. I love the puzzles of life too.
Today, several events of the past few weeks (and even years) have come together to give me an idea for the mission project I have been given to create. I have been able to see the big picture of events that had happened several years ago with those that happened today. I don't want to get any more specific than that because then I may declare the puzzle finished when it's possible that God has only just begun, but I will say this: God's plans are bigger than anything we can understand, and this provides us with yet another reason why we should trust him.

September 28: Prayer
I went to see War Room tonight. It's a new movie based on a family's transformation through prayer. It emphasizes the miracles that only God can make happen and the amazing relief that we get when we give it all to God. I know it was an inspiration to me to strengthen my prayer life, and I can only imagine the way that God is using the movie throughout the world to inspire so many others. Wow--trust the Lord. He can do and is doing BIG things!

September 25-27: Need for God
Senior year.
It's exciting. It's stressful. It's fun. It's stressful. College applications and scholarship applications amongst the usual homework, jobs, and clubs fill the "to-do" list with too many things, yet the clock keeps ticking. This weekend has been fun--a visit to the fair I'd go to when I was younger and a beautiful wedding to inspire my dreams for when I'm older. The fun has filled me with memories and fantasies, which is enough to distract me from the stress, but not enough to cure it.
Fortunately, I've got my cure. I have a God who has asked me to trade him my worries for his peace, free of charge. And my crazy human mind still wants to say, "I've got this," like God doesn't know what he's offering. I HAVE A GOD WHO WANTS TO TAKE MY WORRIES, AND HE MADE A SACRIFICE A LONG TIME AGO SO THAT HE COULD.
Daddy, here you go. They're yours.

September 24: Support
As I've mentioned numerous times, I know that our ability to empathize is not a mistake. Sure, sometimes they make us feel pain even when it's not ours to bear, or they make us desire another's situation, but they're what connect us together. God has enabled each of us to feel for each other, and if we allow him, he will work through us in those "feelings." On the radio today, one woman called in who had received so much bad news in one day, and while she had been running errands, a stranger had come up to her and just said, "I need to hold you," and she did. And through that, she received God's presence. Reach out to others. Take a chance.

September 22-23: Moving Mountains
Yesterday I watched a bird struggle to escape our garage because it couldn't see an exit beyond the window. It kept jumping and fluttering at the window, and despite my urging it (with a broom) to look beyond the window and fly out, it stubbornly continued its struggle. I wonder if God ever sees us struggle like this, even though he's provided us with so many ways to escape. He gives us more than we need, including access to his power, if we only have a little faith.
This morning, on my way to school, a large span of clouds caught my eye quickly, and my brain quickly accessed them as a newly developed mountain behind my school. Another look and I quickly reanalyzed the clouds as just that, clouds, but the startling idea that a mountain had formed reminded me of Jesus' teaching: "I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." Matthew 17:20 With just a little faith, we can do the impossible. We are prepared to move mountains.

September 21: Scared of Help
It's amazing how children can be so terrified of someone trying to help them. Nearly every child under age 5 (and plenty older than that) hate the doctor. The doctor is often equivalent to shots, finger pricks, and blood draws even though it is rarely the doctor doing these things. Nevertheless, children are scared of the doctor even though he (or she) is trying so hard to help them.
I think sometimes people can be scared of the life-doctor. God can be associated with all events--good and bad--miracles and celebrations, but also sickness, worry, and death--the "Yea God!" and the "Why me?" Though God, through Jesus, is our healer, he is also in charge of discipline, but all for the reason of expressing his love for us and taking care of us. Good and bad may happen, and though both may occur in God's presence, we must trust that he is there during the bad because he's there to make it better.

September 20: Fellowship
Again today, God revealed himself through fellowship. With small groups and choirs and one-on-one friendships, we are all here to support each other. It's what keeps us going. This fellowship prepares me for the week and always serves as a safety net for my every need.

September 19: Appreciation
At a volunteer project today, I spent some time with several women and children who are living in a homeless shelter. It was a good experience. Nearly everyone I spoke to was positive about their situation and grateful for the sustenance that the Lord has provided them. I am inspired by how grateful they are for the little they have and the experiences they've had. One boy in particular left me speechless as he prayed for everyone, thanking God abundantly for all he'd been given and then asking God to watch over us, the ones who had homes and families and stuff in excess, rather than over himself and his family. We all need to be appreciative--God has blessed us with so much.
September 18: Not a Coincidence
Earlier this week, my literature teacher asked us what we think of coincidences and fate--do we have free will? Does our free will affect our destiny? Tough questions we'll never know the answer to, but here's my belief: there is more than just one way God can use each of us, so we have the ability to make a choice, but God never fails to use the choice we make for his plan. As we get to know God, I believe we gain new guidance in making those choices.
I made the choice to take part in The Journey program, and my mentor also made that choice. God used our individual choices to pair us up, and I have witnessed in one day alone that God in going to do some great things through this.

September 17: The 2:00 Cleanse
On Thursday afternoon, I was walking around the lake, and I passed my a large group of geese in the water who were cleaning themselves. I've never seen so many geese synchronized in their bath time. Some of them were in the water splashing and others were on the grass drying and picking through their feathers. Of the ones in the water, they were all doing different things to get their entire bodies covered in the water--one was ducking its head up and down to pull the water over it; another was flailing its wings to splash enough water onto its back, and a third kept doing front flips to submerge its topside in the water. I was amazed by the different ways the geese had learned to bathe. However, they all had one thing in common: they needed the water to clean them.
We also need the water to cleanse us. We have each sinned differently, and the way in which we acquire forgiveness from others and ourselves may be different, but the source of purity comes from God. His grace is our water, and we cannot be cleansed without it.

September 15-16: "I Know It's Today"
The past few days, I have been wondering why there are these ups and downs with "seeing" God and just kinda knowing he's there. But today, I had this song stuck in my head--"I Know It's Today"--from Shrek, The Musical. It's the one Fiona sings as she is waiting for her prince. Unfortunately, the only words I could really remember, which kept repeating over and over were, "And I know, he'll appear, 'cause there are rules and there are scriptures..." Those might not even be the right words, but that's what was in my head.
It was a clear reminder--I know He'll appear.

September 14: No Work Necessary
I was on the phone with my granddad today talking about scholarships. I made the point that it's great to be eligible for scholarships, but then there's a bunch more essays to write, to which he commented that that's how a lot of things are, you have to work for the good stuff.
"Yeah, " I said, "Seems like pretty much everything in life is that way."
"There's gracious things," he responded, "we don't have to earn those..."
And that's a terrific point. We can work as hard as we want, but we will never earn grace. We can't earn blessings from God. Worldly things we can earn, but because of our Father's love, heavenly things have been given to us. We don't have to earn them.

September 13: Opened Doors
Today, I saw a lot of doors opened. Not literally...though I did walk through many doorways, I am referring to all the opportunities God set before me today. I began my 3 month journey with a new group of confirmands as well as a 9 months journey with a new mentor, as a part of the new The Journey program. I am excited for the potential in each of these, and I know that the people God has put with me were no coincidence. Each one will have an impact on me, or I on them if I open myself up, and that's exciting! The doors have opened, and I'm walking through.

September 10-12: Crowds
There are many verses in the bible that mention how Jesus spoke to the crowds. "Large crowds followed him," is repeated several times in Matthew alone. Jesus took every opportunity he could to teach, and when there was a large group of people present, he couldn't resist preaching his father's word.
This week, I have witnessed Jesus using present-day crowds to teach his word through Mary Elizabeth. I have been amazed by the number of videos and posts on social media that are using Mary Elizabeth to raise awareness for childhood cancer research. But not only that, her name has also brought thousands closer to God--Jesus is always teaching the crowds that gather under His name.

September 8-9: Love Wins
Love overpowers any situation, and I have witnessed the victorious power of love over the past few days. I am blessed to have non-divorced parents and grandparents who constantly show me what it means to love someone unconditionally, equally through the ups and downs. They have proved to me that nothing can break a relationship that is centered on the same love that Jesus has for us.
And even in moments of pain, love remains strong or even grows stronger. This I have witnessed as the Paris family grieves. Steve, Mandi, Maddy, and Whit have only grown closer and shown their love to each other more since Mary Elizabeth has left. Love wins. Every time.

September 7: A Day Off
I feel like the premise of a day off is to give us a break from the usual schedule and provide us with a day of rest. Today, I've realized how much time a day is and how beneficial it is to take it off. I understand why God gave the commandment to respect the Sabbath. Imagine if every Sunday was treated as a day off. In a way it is, but it is always expected, it's an entitlement, not a gift, and it isn't appreciated or respected; it's filled up just like any other day. I can't explain the difference between a Sunday and a holiday, but there's a difference in feeling. One feels like a day of rest and one doesn't, and I bet if we treated Sundays as the Sabbath and took time to rest, we'd have time to start fresh each week.

September 5-6: Watching Worship
In the past two days, I have had the privilege of watching others worship; sometimes, this provides me with a better form of worship than my own singing. Last night, I stood in an amphitheater, surrounded by thousands, of all ages and backgrounds, who were in the moment, giving their all to the Lord. It was beautiful. This morning, because of technical failures, I sat on stage with a dysfunctional camera in my lap, watching the congregation join together in praise to the Lord. I often take for granted our freedom to have the ability to join together and worship boldly; thank you, God, for giving your son that we might know you and for placing me in a country where I am not persecuted for my faith.

September 3-4: Search for One, Find None
I was encouraging a friend today about her college essay topic. It is recommended to write to point out something that makes you unique, and she claimed not to have anything, but I beg to differ--when I think of her, I think of how she stands out (in a good way). I suggested that she stop thinking about finding an essay topic and just live life a little, keep an open mind, and pay attention to what might be a topic. It led me to realize that when we are looking for one thing, whether that be a specific essay topic or a specific answer to prayer, we blind ourselves from the possibilities surrounding us. This brings me to the idea that when we want God to work in one certain way, we keep ourselves from seeing and appreciating all the other ways He is working. So I'm keeping my mind open.

September 2: A Hard Day Made Better
It's not easy to lose someone, anyone. In fact, it's hard, especially when she is a child. But, if anything good can come from grief, it's an appreciation for the people who are there to support you. God has shown many of us today that he has put people into our lives for a reason, and though it's painful to see them leave at a time we consider too early, it's only because of the moments we were able to spend with them. I am so grateful for everyone at my church and for the network of support surrounding the Paris family.

September 1: For Good
Sweet Mary Elizabeth, who has been battling cancer for over a year, has taken a turn for the worst. Tonight, her parents, siblings, family and friends are preparing to say goodbye, and though my heart is broken, the song playing in my head is "For Good" from Wicked. The song speaks to the parting of the two ladies and their shared feeling--"because I knew you, I have been changed for good." I cannot think of anything more appropriate to describe my feelings and I'm sure many others' towards Mary Elizabeth. For her entire life and especially in the past year, she has changed so many lives for the better, and though we might not understand why God is taking her now, he is good and his timing is perfect, and we must trust in that. When things don't go our way, we can only trust that God's way is better, and he is for good.

August 31: Speak through Me
Exodus 2:14 "Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say."
This is the verse I am trying to memorize this week, and again, God has revealed himself to me through scripture. I like the way it is phrased, starting with a simple command, "go" and encouraging us that he will provide what we need. Like Moses, we all doubt are abilities until we are reminded that they are God-given talents--he's with us and makes the most out of all we offer him. And in the past few days, this has proven to be true. Something God spoke through me to a friend has led her to a better mindset and situation. I could have never given her those words of wisdom without listening to God and going. If we go, he will handle the rest.

August 28-30: Complaining
It's easy to get wrapped up in the bad stuff--when it's too hot, or too crowded, or too boring--but when we're filled with these negativities, they overpower the positivities. And when we voice our complaints, a moment becomes less enjoyable for everyone.
I was talking with a friend on Friday about a challenge to spend 24 hours not complaining and see how it affects her outlook on life. After that, I found myself consumed in all that was going wrong: I'd been working on a project before heading over to a friend's house to get ready for our senior toga night at the football game when I was called and asked to bring hair spray and reminded that "I was missing all the fun." So I stopped working, packed up my stuff (including the hairspray), and headed over to the party. I arrived, walked in, was quickly asked for the hair spray, and found that there was trouble ordering pizza, so I offered to call and pick it up. And that's what they wanted, so that's what I did.
But as I left, I felt dejected--it seemed like barely anyone had said hello to me, though they seemed excited about the arrival of the hairspray and the soon-to-come pizza--so I drove away and continued to "miss all the fun."
Fortunately, we have a humorous God. I'd barely made it 50 yards when I saw one of my friends walking up to the wrong house. I called out my window and prevented her from walking into some random person's house to the party that wasn't there. Laughing, I drove to get the pizza and made note of the way the timing had to work out for me to have been there. God always has a bigger plan than we can see even though sometimes the circumstances seem to only be worth complaining about.
So for this weekend, I've had that on my mind. Complaining just isn't worth it.

August 26-27: God-xplosion!
The last blog I wrote was about how I wasn't seeing/feeling God, but since then, I've been experiencing the complete opposite. The past two days, I feel like I have been in constant contact with God, and it's a good thing. Every where I turn, it seems he's right there. I don't know what has changed, but there's something there that wasn't there before, and I'm excited--I've had a God-xplosion!

August 25: Not Obvious
I guess today was just a not-obvious day. While I don't doubt that God was present during the day today, I am not clear about where I saw Him, at least, not yet. Maybe in a day or two, or weeks or months or even years, I will look back and realize it, but for now, I can only trust that God, like always, is with me, while rechecking my ability to "see."

August 24: Value of a Gift
I feel like all day long I have been writing or talking about the value of nature and its importance in society. I've written an essay in Spanish, read a poem in English, and even experienced nature first-hand today, so let me say, we have a lot to be grateful for. Nature is a reminder of the pure beauty of God's gifts, and any damage to it is a reminder of the corruption of this world. And that extends beyond nature, into our lives and our hearts. I feel refreshed and reenergized in this thought that we were pure and we are able to be pure again through Jesus's crucifixion. And oh! How valuable a gift!

August 23: Pay Attention
I gave my "speech" about hospitality this morning. It went pretty well, and it certainly helped me focus on being hospitable. However, just as the day seemed to be coming to an end, like my hospitality responsibilities were over, I found myself having missed a girl who had distanced herself from the activities at youth. So I went over and started talking to her, and by the end of our conversation, I'd gained an understanding of her life story which had certainly not been easy for her. I think it made a difference to her to have someone to talk to, and I can hope that God used me in that way tonight. But he also showed me, again, how easy it is to get caught up in our own activities that we miss an opportunity to serve. I almost missed my chance to talk to her, so I'm going to strive to keep it on my mind (and I hope you will too!) to be on the lookout for ways to serve.

August 22: Good from Bad
This morning I went to a service project at a widow's house. She is a single mother with two elementary school-aged girls, and her yard needed some work, so we were there, helping to tidy her yard. But God worked through her story more than he worked through us.
She lost her husband eight years ago, after he committed suicide. She grieved by gardening, but has since, developed an organization and now a book to lead grieving widows through athletic training as a way of strengthening their families and bodies. Because of the tragedy she went through, God has been able to use her to help many other women. It would've been easy for her to be angry with God and reject him, but she didn't; she continued to trust him and his will, despite the tragedy. And God worked, and he made good from the bad.

August 21: Inhale. Exhale.
This morning, as I was on my bike, climbing the last hill before my house, I was tired and having trouble catching my breath. I kept breathing harder and harder until I realized that I had inhaled too much and really just needed to exhale deeply. I exhaled and inhaled more slowly, and I felt just like new, ready to go. Inhale. Exhale.
I should've seen this as foreshadowing for the rest of my day. Inhale. Exhale.
My day began with stress. I'd needed to finish some homework assignments from the night before, so I found myself sprinting to catch up. Of course, it wasn't as urgent as I'd made it seem; I was inhaling more than exhaling. Inhale. Exhale.
In the evening, I decided I had a lot of homework and not enough time to do it. So, I started to get stressed and anxious about finishing it all, but then it hit me--I need to exhale. I need to let it go. Inhale. Exhale.
Sometimes, we get wound up in the little things. But that's not what God wants. He's got it all under control, we just need to remember to give it to Him. Inhale.
Exhale.

August 20: Welcome Home

August 19: Surprise!
Something about random kindness makes it seem even more generous.
This morning, I was able to celebrate my teacher's birthday with her by joining with the leadership team to surprise her with cake and a gift. She was blown away. We decorated her room yesterday, so another birthday celebration was not expected. She was thrilled--it really made her day.
This afternoon, I was working at church when one of the maintenance crew, Mitchell, let me know that he'd found a balloon and set it aside for me. When I found it, I saw that he had added post-it notes to make the balloon read "welcome back" rather than "welcome baby." It was such a random thing, and yet it made my day.
Both of these were little things, simple actions to make someone's day a little better. How can you surprise someone with kindness? Let's be fireworks of kindness, surprising everyone with bursts of beautiful light in a sky that seems too dark without them.

August 18: Speak Up!
Just through the day today, God has given me chances to speak up and encourage my fellow believers. I was able to give a message of inspiration and encouragement to the overwhelming number of high school students who woke up early to learn about a Christian service club (and get donuts)! Right after that, I was asked to speak about hospitality this Sunday in youth Sunday school. This is something I've been passionate about for years, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to speak. I've definitely received the clear message that God is paving the way for me to speak up about my faith.

August 17: The Storm
This evening, I was walking my dog (it seems a lot happens during these walks), and some dark gray clouds began to fill the sky. I enjoy looking at clouds; they're interesting and dynamic: just a glance away, and they're different. So as I walked around the lake, I could see this massive, dark gray cloud moving towards me, and as I strolled along, the air got heavier and the light dimmed. A few minutes later (I was now past the half-way point), it began to drizzle until it became a steady rain.
Within seconds, the scene became really dark. The wind kicked up. The rain poured (sideways of course). The thunder rumbled.
Pause. There are several ways to react to the situation:
Within seconds, the scene became really dark. The wind kicked up. The rain poured (sideways of course). The thunder rumbled.
Pause. There are several ways to react to the situation:
- Call home for a ride and walk to the road.
- Get under shelter and wait it out.
- Pick up the pace and walk home quickly.
- Just outright sprint through the rain, nearly blinded, through the muddy path towards home.
I picked #4. So I called out, "let's go!" to Harmony (her queue to start running), and laughing and cheering, ran home. You may disagree, but I'd call that the best possible way to enjoy a storm. Don't get me wrong, my shoes were soaked and my legs covered with dirt, and I could've fallen or slipped, but I didn't. I accepted the storm as a gift, not a roadblock.
Satan puts obstacles in our paths. If we trust God, he can turn these "obstacles" into playgrounds. If we depend on ourselves, it might appear hopeless. Have faith! Let God make the most of these situations.

August 16: Their Only Taste of Jesus
There was one line of the sermon this morning at church that has really stuck out to me. We were talking about living as a Christian 24/7, about bringing Christ into work, into the car, into the grocery store, etc. But when he said, "you may be the only view of Jesus someone gets," I really understood the importance of living as a Christian.
We don't have special glasses that allow us to see what people are going through, the pain or stress their suffering from, their grievances or worries, but I think everyone can use a friendly gesture of love. Maybe your simple helping hand could introduce someone to the love of Jesus Christ. I think that's a pretty cool thing--definitely worth bringing Christ into your life.

August 15: Beauty in Friendships
Today was a day of making, maintaining, and remembering friendships. Each of us has so many people in our lives that make us who we are, and we are those influential factors in others' lives. I know I've talked about this before, but I again stand in awe of the perfection God brings out between friends. I am so blessed by the people in my life.

August 14: A Limited Time on Earth
On the radio today, the 29-year-old host was talking about the recent loss of his college friend. He explains that at 29, he doesn't really consider death as a possibility yet--his days don't seem numbered. His talk wasn't about the sadness of losing his friend (who knew the Lord), but rather the realization that life on Earth is limited, and he wouldn't have been ready to stand in the presence of Jesus--there would've been too many "if only I'd"s.
I guess our time here is like a trip; we're only here so long and while we're here, we might as well make the most of everything presented to us. I can't believe I'm saying this, but YOLO (you only live once)! But it's more than just making your life the best it can be; we also have the responsibility of giving others the gift of eternal life. Don't get stuck with the "if only"s; follow and act on God's word.

August 13: Encouragement (again)
Just another piece of evidence of how simple yet how significant encouragement can be: today, I was riding my bike. I'd been about 9 exhausting miles, and I was peddling my way up a hill at the top of which waited about 20 middle schoolers for the bus. As I got closer, I heard one do a little cheer. You know how middle schoolers are--one does something, and they all follow. So pretty soon I had 20 middle schoolers cheering me on up the hill. That gave me just the boost I needed to make it to the peak.
While I was physically climbing a hill, some people may be figuratively struggling to climb a hill, maybe even a mountain. All they need is a boost of encouragement, and we can be the ones to give it to them.

August 12: The Right Kind of Fuel
I've enjoyed listening to 91.5 FM Victory station today. I heard a devotion about when we're running on empty that has stuck with me. Just like a car, we need fuel, but we can't just pour any liquid into our tank, we can't fill up on junk; we need to fill up with God's spirit. Sometimes we run on empty and the easiest thing to do is just grab the most convenient thing whether that's popularity, money, chocolate, etc. However, this fuel won't sustain us; we'll quickly fall again. The only thing that will continually provide for us is God. Go to him to fill up and stay filled up.

August 11: 525,600 Minutes
Today was the second day of senior year, but really it was the first day of the rest of my life. Many times today I was presented with questions or tasks to prepare me for May, for next August, and even for many years after that. Someone even started playing the "graduation song"..."five hundred, twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes..." Goodness, people! I can't see that far ahead! I don't even know what's going to happen tomorrow. It's one thing to be prepared, but it's another to worry about details we can't control. Lucky for us, we don't need to control it because we have this awesome Father who can see what will happen tomorrow, next week, next May, next August, even next century. We don't need to worry. We've been asked to live in the moment--to make each minute valuable. Let's take it one minute at a time, not 525,600 at a time! Plus, this year's a leap year--we certainly can't plan that extra 1440 minutes.

August 10: You've Got a Friend in Me
I know I've emphasized this a lot, especially in the past months, but the people we surround ourselves with can be a blessing and can be an opportunity for us to be a blessing. Today, I was able to minister to a new student at school just by welcoming her and going out of the way to show her around. I was able to ensure her the presence of a friend, and tonight, at a dinner with many of my close friends, I was reminded of the blessing friends are. God designed us to interact with each other, to sympathize and support, to encourage and inspire. Who needs your reminder: "you've got a friend in me"?

August 7-9: Christian Fellowship
Have you ever experienced true joy? It defies all description; though to me, it feels like I'm an unopened bottle of soda with the perfect amount of fizz built up inside, ready to be opened to bring enjoyment another. And no amount of sadness or worry or fear can disrupt this state of being--this is joy. I believe each of us experience joy in different moments, but I have found that I often become joyful when I am with others in the presence of God through worship or Christian fellowship, and now, as I sit writing this, I am filled with joy.
Over the past few days I have been blessed beyond anything I could have asked for. The ActingUp family is amazing. I cannot use words alone to describe what every member means to me. Each person is a thread to a blanket that has been woven through the generous giving of support, encouragement and love. And though this show has ended, the blanket stands strong. A blanket to provide warmth in cold times, comfort in times of pain, and a source of joy in times of sadness. The relationships that have been built are strong. They will not falter. I can trust every person there, and I know that no matter where I go (if I go) in the next years, they will welcome me home at any time. Thank you God for providing me with yet another example of perfect fellowship--the fellowship that is now the source of my joy, overpowering any sadness from the end of yet another show and inspiring me to be a source of light and love to all those around me.

August 6: Remember Who (and Whose) You Are
Part of Bye Bye Birdie is based on Kim getting "pinned" by Hugo, so as of today, on my jacket, I have a pin. The pin says "Remember Who You Are." What a great tip that is for acting--stay in character, remember who you are. Better yet, what a great tip for life! We hear so often: "be yourself," "don't conform to society," etc. Remember who you are. But not only that: remember who you are in Christ, whose you are. Don't become jealous of someone else and don't become boastful. If you were the only human to exist, God who still have sacrificed His son. You are so important. Even though you may see yourself as worthless or undesirable, remember that you are so dearly loved. And by knowing that, you also have the responsibility of sharing that with others. You are loved.

August 5: Thank the Lord!
Last night was a pretty rough dress rehearsal for Bye Bye Birdie. People dropped lines, missed queues, confused harmonies; it was a little scary, especially for two days before opening night. It occurred to me that our biggest star and the foundation of Acting Up had accidentally been left outside. No wonder the show was falling apart! Realizing this, I sent a message to our director--something along the lines of "the most important part of our show is missing. Could you please help organize a cast prayer tomorrow night?" And that's exactly what we did.
Tonight, a cast member said a well spoken prayer, thanking God and giving the show back to Him for His use, and then the show went on. And it went amazingly! Never doubt anything if it's in God's hands. His will is good. Trust in it (and don't forget to thank Him too!)

August 4: Encouragement
I know I've mentioned this before, but I cannot emphasize any more how important encouragement is. It's like oil in a car engine; you can't go anywhere without it. It's the same with people. Without encouragement, the parts squeak and squeal and rub until the machine just falls apart, people become angry and frustrated and relationships fall apart. We are called to be servants, but encouragement is taking the step down while also lifting someone else to the step up, and if everyone is encouraging, everyone keeps moving up. Who can you help up to the next step?

August 3: Can't Be a Coincidence
Just yesterday, after providing me with a great trip location, Glen Arbor was plowed through by a tornado. Shops we visited and streets we drove on are now blocked by fallen trees and debris. All this just 24 hours after we left. A simple change to the family reunion dates or a flight schedule could've caused our family to have gotten stuck in the storm. Luckily Because of God, however, we weren't. Every member of the family arrived home safely. Just another piece of evidence that our God is a God of miracles, not a God who takes credit for coincidences.

August 2: Miraculous Creation
I was repeatedly amazed by the perfect creation all around me today. I see God's masterpiece in the way the sunlight falls beautifully on the trees, the sparkle of dew on flowers, and the talents he has given those around me. I was reminded that our God is a God of miracles and with a strong faith, these miracles become more and more recognizable. So today, I am thankful for the miraculous creation.

July 25-August 1: We Are Family
In other words, this time last week, I was sitting watching the sunset with familiar faces but otherwise unfamiliar people. However, what separates family from strangers is that the uncertainty and unfamiliarity quickly disappears. With family, it no longer seems to matter whether we know each others' recent events; we're family and that's all we need to know. Instantly, all barriers that have developed over three years disappear and bonds of trust develop from encouragement and kindness. That's family. And when you know that these bonds need to last another three years, a week becomes precious time.
"Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity." 1 Timothy 5:1-2
But we're not. We have the God of the universe on our side, and I think He would gladly support the reunion of the family of God. One day, it won't matter who's watching the sunset because every person will be family.

July 24: Original
What I really want to share are these verses, and I hope that they speak to you like they spoke to me. I will leave it at that; after all, each of us is an original and God may have a different interpretation waiting for you than he did for me.
"Since this is the kind of life we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its implications in every detail of our lives. That means we will not compare ourselves with each other as if one of us were better and another worse. We have far more interesting things to do with our lives. Each of us is an original.

That means we will not compare ourselves with each other as if one of us were better and another worse. We have far more interesting things to do with our lives. Each of us is an original.
Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.
Be very sure now, you who have been trained to a self-sufficient maturity, that you enter into a generous common life with those who have trained you, sharing all the good things that you have and experience." Galatians 5:25-26; 6:5-6

July 23: Look Up
As I was walking today, I passed a woman working in her yard. She paid no attention to me, so I chose not to greet her and kept walking, but I got to thinking: what would Jesus have done? Would he have passed by her? Generally speaking, I'd say that most people enjoy being notice, rather than ignored, so, out of love, Jesus would've greeted her. So I kept walking with intentions of greeting the next person regardless of if they see me first.
As I approached another woman, I looked up, smiled, and waited for her to acknowledge me too when we would exchange our smiles. But she never looked up.
I did the same for another person passing by, but he did the same--he looked down. Why is everyone looking down? It got me thinking about a radio commercial for Dixieland which talks about looking up as well as the reasons for looking down--often to check a text message or busy ourselves on our phones to avoid an unnecessary encounter with another human. It's becoming a habit to look down, even when you're missing everything in front of you. And so, I encourage you to defy that habit and look up and see what you've been missing. Greet your neighbors. Reform your community. I think that's what Jesus would do.

July 22: Sign of Love
We had one of those nice brief summer storms today. The clouds came, then the wind, the thunder, the rain. Afterwards, it had cooled off nicely, so I decided to walk my dog. As we started, the sun began to peek out of the clouds, and I began anticipating a rainbow. I kept walking, looking around as I went, excited to see the reminder of God's promises and love but repeatedly disappointed that I couldn't find it.
As I continued, I began to wonder what it would mean if I didn't see one. Does that mean God isn't "renewing" his love? Of course not! He reminded me then that a rainbow is just the most well known symbol of his love when really he is sending us reminders all the time. Just today, I was privileged enough to share God's love to an older woman by helping her in the grocery store. These little reminders may not be as noticeable as a rainbow, but God's love never ends.
Despite my realization, our God (who most certainly has a sense of humor) still gave me a snippet of a rainbow. Just enough to confirm my thoughts.
Another thing about rainbows: they are most easily seen in dark gray sky, rather than light gray or blue. Keep this in mind: the contrast of God's love in darkness makes a bigger impact--we can be that light, that love, in someone's darkness.

July 21: A Cure to Crankiness
A trip to SAMs is all it takes to find a cranky person, and yesterday, my sister and I did just that. In the check out line (where you can always find mass quantities of impatience and tiredness), the cashier was particularly cranky. I'm talking about a typical teenage girl ready to get off work and enjoy her night. She, in my opinion, had put on way too much make up, including fake eye lashes that weighed so much, her eyelids drooped; all that to say, I was quick to judge. I'd already heard her being sassy to another employee, and we'd hesitated getting in her line.
Finally, we'd unloaded our stuff onto the conveyer belt, and even though she'd already presented us with her crankiness and sassiness, I refused to let that get to me, so Catherine and I started a conversation. After talking and being kind and friendly, she seemed in a much better mood, and I can only hope that she passed it on to the people waiting behind us. Nevertheless, I'd say that unconditional kindness is a sure way to make anyone's day better.

July 20: A Dangerous Christian
"Is it not clear to you that to go back to that old rule-keeping, peer-pleasing religion would be an abandonment of everything personal and free in my relationship with God? I refuse to do that, to repudiate God’s grace. If a living relationship with God could come by rule-keeping, then Christ died unnecessarily." Galatians 2:21(The Message)
I read this verse this morning, and it spoke to me in a new way. Sometimes, it seems that Christianity is about doing the right thing so that your reputation leads others to do the right thing as well (and meet God in the process). However, Paul clarifies that that is not the idea at all!
Christ died so that we can have a relationship with God, not so that we can follow rules and build good reputations. We are no longer restrained to man's regulations, but we are free in God's will. It's time to be a "dangerous" Christian and risk disappointing peers or breaking rules if that's what it takes to develop a relationship with Christ or lead others to do the same.

July 19: Spoonful of Sugar
During church this morning, the campers from music and drama camp gave their final performance. When they finished their excellent performance, the service continued with a prayer and then an offering. The boy sitting by me asked, "when will we be done with this?" I told him, "Soon. Right now they're taking an offering so that the church has money to do camps like this." He responded positively and waited patiently.
His reaction got me thinking: it's easier to do non-preferred tasks when you receive something in the end. (It's easier to take your medicine with a spoonful of sugar.) However, Jesus said himself that it is more of a blessing to give than it is to receive. Some of those people in the congregation today may not have emptied their pockets--after all, what benefit would they receive?--but had they known that a child was on stage because of someone's giving, maybe the cash would've flowed out.
Now, I know I can't change what happened today, but I can change what happens tomorrow. You (and I) now both know that there is someone on the other side receiving the gift. And while we may not know that we will receive anything in return, "It is more blessed to give than it is to receive." (Acts 20:35)

July 18: Chill for Best Results
Take a break. Relax. Enjoy yourself. Watch the sunset. Sleep under the stars. Take a minute to laugh. And just
chill.
July 17: Paul Was a Human
I've been reading some of Paul's letters recently; first Ephesians, then Colossians, now Galatians. Galatians 6:11 says, "See what large letters I use as I write with my own hand!" As I read this, it hit me: Paul was a follower of Christ, and he used everything God gave him to tell others about Christ. And look at his impact. His writing is in the bible; it is still being used to share the Gospel even today. I think that's really cool!
Paul used writing to share the Truth. He wrote with "his own hand," which was given to him by God. We too have blessings and gifts that can be used to share the Word. We might not write a book of the bible, but we can use our gifts in other ways that may be just as effective. Let's make sure everyone gets the invitation to the eternal family reunion.

July 16: A Hand to Hold
Today was water day at Music and Drama Camp. That means there was a tall (2-3 stories) and steep water slide for children ages 5-12 to go on. Therefore, there were several scared children. I was at the top of the water slide, and a lot of them, especially the little ones, needed a hand to hold or a pull up to the top. I could see on their faces what a relief it was once they grabbed onto my hand. One kid in particular was really scared. I reached my hand, and she grabbed on. "Don't worry, you can't fall now," I said. And then I had a realization.
Sometimes, we are climbing these steep, slippery cliffs towards God. It's difficult and maybe even scary, but when we realize that God is holding our hand, we know that we're going to get there. We will make it because God is faithful--we can't fall when he's holding our hand.

July 14-15: By Fear or by Joy
There are two emotions that bring people together: fear and joy. Joy is often the preferred method, but sometimes fear works even better. Last night, I witnessed both. A harsh storm blew through and scared several of the kids in the cast of Bye Bye Birdie, leaving them in tears, but comforted by hugs and encouragement from the rest of the cast. Fear brings people together. Then, I was at Chickfila, sitting in the back of my friend's minivan, with four other friends, laughing my head off. Joy brings us together. "Laugh with your happy friends when they're happy. Share tears when they're down." Romans 12:15

July 13: Encouragement
When I'm working with people, I find it is more enjoyable for everyone if we are spreading encouragement to each other and the people around us. It's so much easier to believe in good things when you're complimenting the good in others or revealing your good to others. I watched a video today, and I've attached the link. I think you should watch it. It reveals how a little reminder, an act of kindness, and expression of encouragement can go a long way.

July 12: Remember to Be Thankful
I think it's easy to get caught up in the craziness in such a way that prayer becomes a quick "dear God, please____" rather than a conversation and reflection with God, a time of thankfulness, praise, and reunion. It's important to be thankful and recognize all we've been given, as Jesus did before each miracle he performed. We've been blessed by more than we can ever realize, but our appreciation will grow as we give thanks.

July 7-11: The Tree of Love
As I mentioned before, I decided to add a painting to my room, a tree. It's perfect not only because I love nature, but because there are many examples in the bible that compare a tree and its fruit to God and us.
Therefore, the tree residing in my room is no ordinary tree; it is the Tree of Love. Not a destination for you and your "true love", not a tree of heart-shaped leaves, and not a tree producing a love potion as sap; this tree is a reminder. You might recognize it better if it was in the shape of a cross.
Jesus' sacrifice came from God's unconditional and sacrificial love for us; the cross came from the tree, but the tree is still thriving, and I hope that it will yield many more acts of unconditional and sacrificial love through me and others. This week, as the tree and "being devoted to one another in love" was running through my head, I noticed selfless love around me--it sure does make a situation better for everyone involved.
And now, the tree is living in my room, and I hope soon it will be living in my heart and blossoming in actions of unconditional love.

July 6: A Life Verse
I've decided to add some paint decorations to my room this week. I decided on a basic design a few days ago, but I want the focus of the wall to be on a "life verse", a bible verse that I want to use to center my life on what really matters: loving God and loving others. I think it will be good to have a short phrase to be able to recall to recenter and refocus my life in moments of need. The question: what will be this "life verse" (at least for the next few years)?
I went through my bible, looking at what I'd tabbed or written down and what really captured my goal to love unconditionally. I ended up in Romans 12, a chapter of the bible that has always stood out to me. Though most of this chapter says exactly what I've been thinking, I narrowed it down to Romans 12:10, "Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another about yourselves." Short and sweet, easy to remember, but difficult to live by--Perfect.
I encourage you to find a "life verse" too. What is your life centered on?

July 5: To Remind You to Sit
It was such a beautiful day today! The sun finally came out, and it was cool and breezy. I was walking with my dog, and we passed by a playground where a mom and dad were playing with their young child who seemed to be enjoying the playground for one of the first times.
Of course, Mom and Dad were a little nervous, so Dad was on the ground cheering on his girl, and Mom was tailing her as she toddled towards the slide. And just as the little girl was about to toddle right onto the slide, where she would've tumbled down, the mom grabbed her and reminded her to sit down first.
Have you ever been so excited or eager to do something that you nearly forget the safety cautions? Or maybe you're trying something new, and you didn't realize you were at risk until later when you've seen the danger pass you by? Good news! God's got your back. He's there to remind you to sit, and even to catch you when you fall. Listen and trust his presence.

July 4: Pass It Forward
The 4th of July is a great day to celebrate our freedoms, culture, and family. I got to spend the day with my family. We had a big breakfast in the morning, headed to a Gwinnett Braves game in the evening. After a good game and spectacular fireworks, we made our way to the parking lot, got in the car, and began to look at the mess of traffic in front of us.
I'm sure all the cars were full of families, just like us, eager to get home/ice cream/dinner, but no one could just pull out, and fly from the parking lot. Realizing that, a chain of kindness began; we've all been there: one car lets you out, and then it's your responsibility, out of appreciation, to let another car out in front of you.
As we sat, I watched this process, and it made me think of Jesus' parable of forgiveness to the debtor:
Matthew 18:23-33
“Therefore, the Kingdom of Heaven can be compared to a king who decided to bring his accounts up to date with servants who had borrowed money from him. In the process, one of his debtors was brought in who owed him millions of dollars. He couldn’t pay, so his master ordered that he be sold—along with his wife, his children, and everything he owned—to pay the debt.
“But the man fell down before his master and begged him, ‘Please, be patient with me, and I will pay it all.’ Then his master was filled with pity for him, and he released him and forgave his debt.
“But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a few thousand dollars. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment.
“His fellow servant fell down before him and begged for a little more time. ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it,’ he pleaded. But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and put in prison until the debt could be paid in full.
“When some of the other servants saw this, they were very upset. They went to the king and told him everything that had happened. Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said, ‘You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me. Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’"
For you see, the first debtor was forgiven, but then didn't replicate that forgiveness with his servant. A similar idea is paying for the person behind you in the drive-thru, for after you pay extra, the person behind you will do the same, and eventually the person that needs it the most will receive a free meal. Even though most everyone still pays the same amount, it's an encouraging and inspiring surprise to receive someone else's kindness. There are ways every day for us to start a chain or pass on the kindness. Go for it!
