I was on the phone with my granddad today talking about scholarships. I made the point that it's great to be eligible for scholarships, but then there's a bunch more essays to write, to which he commented that that's how a lot of things are, you have to work for the good stuff.
"Yeah, " I said, "Seems like pretty much everything in life is that way."
"There's gracious things," he responded, "we don't have to earn those..."
And that's a terrific point. We can work as hard as we want, but we will never earn grace. We can't earn blessings from God. Worldly things we can earn, but because of our Father's love, heavenly things have been given to us. We don't have to earn them.
